I am one of those guys who has never heard of this game and when I first saw it I immediately blurted out, “hey it’s SoulCalibur!”
This video brings up an interesting perspective that I think that I think gets lost on a lot of older gamers. Those older games, the ones that are always “better in my day” tend to suck. Suck hard. The Legend of Zelda sucks, Metroid sucks, the original Sonic sucks. That even goes into more modern games where original IP tend to be really awful unless they adopt alot from a system that works. Uncharted 1 sucked, Halo 1 kind of sucked, and Bioshock sucked.
Now I’m only talking from a design perspective. Storytelling wise, sure you can like. The challenge? Yep, those games definitely provided a challenge but it’s kind of a fake difficulty brought on by limited tech and shot in the dark game design. Of course, there is a really easy way to know that those games sucked, their sequels were so much better. A Link to the Past (as the true sequel to The Legend of Zelda), Super Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Uncharted 2, Bioshock 2, etc. All much better games that don’t deviate from the original’s game mechanics
