Seems like The Angry Video Game Nerd is looking at “horror” retro games for this October. Of course, the real horror this time is how bad the games are.
One thing that I like about James Rolfe’s reviews over more mainstream reviews is that when he talks about the bad controls in a game, he really discusses how awful they are. While I don’t deny that there are games with bad or difficult to master controls out there, most reviewers tend to equate “I’m stupid” with “bad controls”.
This mainly comes from motion control games like Red Steel 2 or Skyward Sword, both being accused by some folks of having unresponsive controls. Since I’ve played these games I know they aren’t, and the reviewers never really go into what they are doing exactly, like what movements they make what results they expect. They just leave it at “unresponsive”. That’s where good or bad controls should be analyzed, is in whether you push a button or move a certain way and see it lines up with what you are expecting but that’s only part of the answer. The other part is just not sucking.
