Pach-Attack: Surface and Wonderbook Might Not be the Next Frontier of Gaming

This is a pretty good episode of Pach-Attack. So let’s break it down.

1) Why aren’t more PC games on Blu-Ray. This was the reason Nintendo didn’t adopt an HD console until now, because back then HD tvs weren’t common place. Now they are so the Wii U makes sense. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Blu-ray drive for a PC, so if a game came out exclusively for PC and on Blu-ray, most people I know would just be out of luck.

2) Microsoft Surface. I agree with Pach, analogue sticks, buttons, etc. are necessary to play most modern games. Kinect has issues that prove you can’t just take modern game design and apply it to something that clearly calls for something more post-modern.

3) Sony Wonderbook. I agree again with Pachter. Wonderbook looks interesting but does it really have any applications for games? I’m actually sure it does, but I haven’t see any good looking applications nor can I think of any. And like with the Surface and Kinect, I think these would all make fine supplements. Kind of like how the Wii U uses the bottom screens for games like Rayman Legends and ZombiU, there are immersive elements, more cooperative elements, and a real chance for Sony and Microsoft to break into asynchronous game play.
