I remember hearing about this game a few years ago and it’s both hard to believe that it’s finally releasing and that it started back in 2002. Dust is a 2D action-platformer RPG that looks freakin’ beautiful. Everything, except the music, is done by the same guy including all the programming, art assets, and animation (okay I guess the voice acting isn’t him either). All of this pulls together into a rather fantastic looking game. Check out this launch trailer followed by the developer commentary:
Makes me wish I had an Xbox to play it on. Now, the reason why I say “almost everything you need to know” is because you may have noticed that the combo system in the game was talked about but never explained. To me, this looks like a button masher, but after exploring the main website, I still couldn’t figure out what makes the combo system deep. Maybe after the game comes out, someone can tell me.
Anyways, some quick things that I feel may bug me. First is the frequent cutscenes. Could just be the part of the game the commentary was on, but he said it was about 2 hours in and it seemed like every couple of steps there was a cutscene. Those usually get really annoying really fast since it smashes the pacing of the game into a fine paste. The story, since this seems like a very story driven game. I’m just going off what a couple sites have said but the hero has amnesia, there’s a great evil that only he can stop yadda yadda yadda. I’m almost more than positive that it won’t end up being so generic and cliche, but I won’t rule out the possibility.
If anyone has a chance to play this game when it releases, be sure to drop a comment telling us how it is.
