Speculation Friday: There’s a Bit More to the PlayStation All-Star Barrel

So either official or through link we now a good amount of the characters that are going to be in the PlayStation All-Star Battle Royal, better known as that Sony Smash Bros. ripoff.

These characters are:

- From Wikipedia

While this is a pretty sizable list there are some several disappointments. The first is that with the exception of Good Cole and Evil Cole, each character is from a different series, which wouldn’t be so bad except that not only are some of these characters very obvious bottom of the barrel, starting with a guest character like a Big Daddy from Bioshock is just…weird.

So this Friday I want to speculate on the possibilities of what characters haven’t been announced or leaked yet, will be included as DLC, or will be added in the probably inevitable sequel.

1) Subject Delta

Okay, so Bioshock is going to represented in this game. I have come to accept that. Then after watching the video of how the Big Daddy will play, it kinda felt underwhelming. It’s true that it can use some plasmids but from the looks of it he’s mainly built to use his drill which is cool, but it could be about 1,000 times cooler.

So not only is Subject Delta actually actually a main character in one of the game instead of just a mook, he also can duel wield his drill with plasmids. Personally, I love setting traps and it was one of my favorite features in Bioshock 2, so hopefully one day Subject Delta becomes playable.

2) Victor “Goddamn” Sullivan

Even when the original Smash Bros was released, both Mario and Luigi were included. While maybe not the flagship title for Sony as a company, it’s hard to imagine a game with Nathan Drake and no Victor Sullivan.

So it seems like a lot of Drake’s moves involve context actions from the game like taking cover and zip lining, as well as using heavy gun like the AK-47 and grenade launcher. I know people generally don’t like clones of characters, but I think in the case of Uncharted Sully can play similarly to Drake, but focus more on his Wes pistol or his sniper skills. But even if he is too the same.

3) Lazarovich

The best villain so far in the Uncharted series, Lazarovich is not only had the meanest streak, but also is like the only real boss battle in the series. Instead of focusing on multiple weapons and being a bit more agile like Drake appears to be, he will be tank, with a shorter range shotgun as a weapon and the ability to lob 2-4 grenades at a time.

For a super, I can imagine one going into a healed invincible mode like the end of Uncharted 2 and another calling out a bunch of his mooks. Maybe, the developers can even give us what we’ve always wanted to see, a big purple version of him as a guardian.

4) Kessler

Along those same lines, everyone loves a good villain to play as and I think Kessler from the first Infamous would be great addition. It also bothered in Infamous 2 you never got some of the powers that Kessler did (which makes sense if you know the twist at the end of the first game) including making clones, teleporting, and summoning robots.

I don’t really have that much to say about him other than yes I know what this would imply about the number of Coles in the game and I think Kessler would’ve been a better choice than making a good Cole and an Evil Cole.

5) Ethan Mars

That could be his weapon.

He would be a joke character. Hey maybe he can cut off his own finer as one of his own moves. His victory taunt will be him sitting in a corner cry.

Level 3 special move is him passing out trolololololololol

6) Kite

Would it have been too hard to secure rights to this character from the .Hack series? I mean I know CyberConnect2 just made a .Hack fighting game that is Japan only and included on a Blu-Ray movie, but one of the reasons I even got a PS2 was to play the four original .Hack.

He would even be perfect for a fighting game featuring a lot of different moves with this twin blades and magic for special attacks. His supers can also be Data Drain, Drain Hearts, or even the Tri-Edge sign that the creators of .Hack love letting him do (despite it not making any sense that he can).

To be perfectly honest, the barrel wasn’t all that full to begin with. Of course, I’m not a huge Sony fan so I bet anyone out there can think of a much better list than me. I’m going to check out this game when it comes out because I am eager to see if it succeeds or fails at being a decent Smash Bros. inspired fighter, but there are so many characters on the current roster that I just don’t care about that it is hard to be excited. Let’s face it, it’s hard to celebrate a company’s history like this when there isn’t that much history to celebrate.
