Why Does This Exist?

Before you watch, let me tell you what this is. This is a Sega Genesis hooked up with shock collars to actually hurt the players when they take damage in the game. Personally, it was a bit disturbing to watch the first time but it’s mostly harmless.

This instantly reminded me of device I saw a long time ago called the Painstation, an art piece that does basically the same thing except it’s you and an opponent playing a game of Pong.

I get that some people might be into this kind of stuff, but I also think this kind of stuff crosses a line. I guess what freaks me out about this is that it can easily turn a game into a non-game by adding a physical threat, and even though I know it’s not, it just looks like a regular old torture device.
