First off, I’m sorry for not posting a weekly update last week, but I was on Spring break and went to Disneyland and had a bunch of other fun stuff (including doing taxes).
For the last week I’ve been playing Kid Icarus: Uprising for the 3DS and let me tell you that it is a blast. The controls are great (despite what some reviewers would say), the gameplay is great, and as a couple of cherries on the cake, the story is hilarious with excellent voice acting and some of the best music I’ve heard in a game since Super Mario Galaxy. The multiplayer is also amazing, featuring plenty of options including weapons, powers, and tactics.
Expect me to rant about this game for a while.
I also got a chance to play Braid, which is a brilliant game in terms of design, but I have a problem with the story. I’m trying to work that in a full length article, but in a nutshell, as a literature student, Braid’s story has issues with trying to be deep. One of the trademark signs of amateurish writing is messy symbolism. Despite what I think most people believe, symbols are lot like tropes, as in they are suppose to invoke certain mental images or feelings by the sheer presence. I understand where Braid is coming from, and the symbolism makes sense, but only within it’s own context. The princess representing the atomic bomb and Tim representing humanity really did just seem like something added at the absolutely last minute, doesn’t seem to be hinted at throughout any other part of the story except in the beginning (with the burning city) and honestly, I just didn’t care. I think that’s the main problem with Braid is that the story is so not integrated into the gameplay that it is entirely possible not to care.
I was talking to Cameron about it and we agreed that the story would have been much better if the deep stuff was cut out and it was just about a guy trying to save the princess with a plot twist at the end. Honestly, the game would be still be amazingly fun without its pseudo deep story.
Anyways, to conclude this I will post a Yugioh Abridged video. Recently I found out that Michael Bay is directing the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and he has changed the turtles to being aliens. Seems like LittleKuriboh has also heard of this and made an appropriate redux of the first episode of his abridged series.
