I think a lesson all game developer’s should learn is that you can’t please everyone so why bother? This article has BioWare discussing some of the hardships they had faced when trying to please every gamer out there with the Mass Effect games.
One of the key points in Indie Game: The Movie was that a big triple A title was something that had rounded edges, something for everyone and nothing where someone could accidentally hurt themselves. I think Bioware making these kinds of comments kind of codifies that statements, and it shows. I think it’s a shame that major developers can’t take a more indie approach to games. Imagine what bigger teams and more more money could do for a concept like Super Meat Boy or Braid. Not that those aren’t already excellent games, but if companies wold take away the need to appeal to everyone and only apply what the niche would like. I dunno, I think some games would be a more enjoyable medium if things didn’t have to be watered down so much.
